How to care for your braces
Braces trap food very easily which promotes plaque formation. Plaque can lead to gum disease and enamel damage. With daily use of effective oral hygiene techniques, plaque build up can be prevented.
The foundation of good oral hygiene is effective brushing. This should be done with a soft bristled brush, after every meal and snack and should be done slowly and carefully. It is important to not only brush the braces but also brush both the inside and chewing surfaces of the teeth.
Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft rounded bristle that's in good condition. Braces wear out a toothbrush quickly, replace your brush as soon as it shows signs of wear.
Brushing with an Interdental Brush is also a vital part of maintaining good oral hygiene while wearing braces. Interdental Brushes are designed to slip under your archwire to more completely remove plaque and food particles near your brackets.
Flossing is also a vital part of keeping your mouth healthy while wearing braces. Floss threaders are available in our Orthodontic Travel Kits.
